It’s time to step up to the plate

Two men on, the crack of the bat, the fans roar, and the inning is over……… What happened?
A triple play…. In baseball it is one of the fastest ways to end an inning.

The Business Studies and Social Science Departments are offering a Triple Play to accelerate your studies.
One night, one trip to campus per week for three courses, that is a triple play.

What courses?

On Wednesday nights during the spring semester 2011 the Business Studies Department is offering:
ACCT106.H83 Principles of Accounting II 4 credits
MKTG100.H83 Principles of Marketing 3 credits
ECON112.H83 Principles of Economics (MICRO) 3 credits
For one trip and one night that totals 10 credits

When do the classes meet?

Each course is taught in the hybrid mode and will meet five times during the semester. That is three courses offered from 6:30 to 9:00 pm in Penn 410 on alternating Wednesday evenings, each meeting five times during the 15 week semester. You may enroll in one, two, or all three courses.

ACCT106.H83… will meet on 8/25 9/15 10/6 10/27 11/17
MKTG100.H83... will meet on 9/8 9/29 10/20 11/10 12/8
ECON112.H83… will meet on 9/1 9/22 10/13 11/3 12/1

How does it work?
The typical traditional course presentation is accomplished in what is referred to as the face to face mode. Students attend a scheduled class to receive a lecture/discussion of material, to review the solutions for homework assignments, to take quizzes/tests, and exams. For a three credit course, that would entail meeting for 150 minutes a week during the standard semester.
The hybrid course combines the flexible schedule advantage of an elearning course and the instructor availability of a face to face class. These hybrids have 5 scheduled meetings for discussion of course material. The course schedule is presented in advance so students know when they will be in the classroom and what topic(s) will be discussed. Homework for each chapter and chapter tests are usually accomplished on line using the college’s Bd Vista site and the publisher’s site. Exams are given in the testing center, for your convenience these are usually made available for a full week.

A Summer 2009 Report:
"The city of San Antonio, Texas, hosted the 21st Annual Conference of ACBSP, where more than 500 colleagues from around the world joined to "Celebrate Global Diversity," this year's conference theme. The keynote speakers, concurrent session, exhibitors, ACSBP staff and officers all coordinated to offer insight on improving the quality of business education while recognizing the challenges of these economic times.
On Sunday, June 28, 52 institutions were honored at the Accreditation Banquet. This represents the largest number of business schools and programs accredited by ACBSP in one year since the association's beginning."

The Accounting Area in conjunction with the Management/Marketing area and Social Science Area are coordinating an effort that would allow students to take three courses at the "same" time and earn 10 credits in a semester. Still in the planning stage, this scheduling tactic would require students to come to campus ONLY once weekly and take the courses in a revolving fashion. All three HYBRID courses will be supported by BbVista throughout the semester.

As a bit of news for the MA area, the latest offering of the ACA Board Exam for Phlebotomy has brought the total percentage of passing to 95%. This is great news for the program since most employers are seeking this certification as a requirement for employment.

The “final exam” in the Wedding Cake – Assembly and Decoration course is a practical test of each students decorating skills and abilities. Using their own ideas, along with knowledge gained in class, students have two hours to decorate a three-tier wedding cake. These photos show the cake designs that students created in this semester’s class.

Bucks County Community College along with 7 other two-year colleges organized this conference on Assessment. Linda Suskie, the VP of the MIDDLE STATES COMMISSION ON HIGHER EDUCATION, represented most of the day. Her excellent presentations that included topics such as "Fostering a Culture of Assessmen," "Faculty Owernship of the Process," "Assessment Toolbox" etc. were interesting and insightful.

Approximatley 20 people from BCCC attended this conference including the CORE Liaisons from most departments.

An advertising class at LOWER BUCKS CAMPUS met with Slack's Cafe last week...they are currently providing food service at the campus. Students were organized into "agencies" and will be developing an advertising campaign for the cafe as a semester long project.
Melissa Cruz..the franchise owner and Jim Sell the executive director of LBC gave the students some great information to help them start formulating ideas. We'll keep you posted on their progress....

The phlebotomy program has aligned with Nursing 202 in a multidisciplinary component for the Externship. The students will rotate one day through a nursing lab utilizing SIM-MAN and experience “real” patient care. The first student started today and the feed- back was very positive. This opportunity will benefit the students as they pursue employment in a hospital setting.

A tribute to our beloved colleague...JOAN WEISS

"Sadly and yet proudly we have had our own Randy Pausch in our synagogue this past year. Last December Joan Weiss was told that after three good years, her cancer had come back with a vengeance and it was a matter of time. Joan was also a professor of business at Bucks County Community College. She had touched the lives of hundreds and thousands of young people not only in class but as an advisor to young people in an organization In Free Enterprise. Joan's students competed in national and international competitions against mostly 4-year colleges and won more than once. Joan was also that uniquely special teacher that we never foget. Joan was given the poor prognosis in December and she and Fred with to Disney World with their children and little grandson Darrien. They went to have fun and they did. Then she came back and went back to work because that's what Joan did and that's what gave her meaning. Then Joan and Fred went to Bermuda, Atlanta. She had never seen the Boston Pops but wanted to so they did and went on a three week cruise to Italy, Spain and France in July and then she went back to work for the fall semester. Joan's approach was, The end is going to come but not today. Today was to live and like Randy Pausch, Joan always had a sense of hope. Hope doesn't always come true but hope can sustain us today. Joan told me some months ago, she wanted to go back to Israel but just days before this new year began Joan journeyed to the heavenly Jerusalem.

Joan had a great passion in life. Her passion was not grounded in money. She showed she could be a real success in the business world but she chose instead to teach young people how to find success in the world of business and her passion was grounded in people. One of Joan's dearest friends told me that she thought she was Joan's best friend until she saw how many best friends Joan had."

I had a wonderful time taking a beating in the ocean 3 weeks ago after the tropical storm blew through. it rare that there are size able waves to surf in the Atlantic ocean but Sunday the 6th was one of those exceptional days. My bother and I spent about three hours in 3 to 6ft surf. It was lot of fun and also reminded us we aren't college kids anymore.

It was a great conference that brought to light many exciting ways to energize and engage students in the classroom. One of the presentations got my undivided attention because I have experimented with using student created videos in my classes this past semester to meet some learning objectives. For example, we made videos that represented the 4P’s of marketing and video resumes etc. Anyway…the link I’m providing here presents a showcase of digital media success stories at U of P.

“ Student-created video and multimedia is an increasingly popular undergraduate assignment option at Penn, replacing traditional research papers. Creative videos assignments engage students in high level critical thinking, writing, planning, scripting and group collaboration tasks.” (WIC at U of P )

Miss Iannaccone, visiting from Avellino, Italy was interested in learning about the higher education system, American accounting standards, and the accounting vocation in the United States. Professor Wiegand graciously permitted Miss Tannaccone to “sit in” Accounting Principles and made himself available to discuss American accounting practices with her prior to class.
The Group Study Exchange (GSE) program of The Rotary Foundation is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for young adults. Through the program, teams of professional men and women exchange visits between paired areas in different countries. The awards involve four-week visits, during which team members share homes with Rotary families, experience the host country's institutions and ways of life, observe their own vocations as practiced abroad, develop personal and professional relationships, and exchange ideas with their professional counterparts. This Rotary year, our district is exchanging teams with District 2100 in Naples, Italy.

A PARALEGAL UPDATE from Tracy Timby!

Paralegal students participated in the Bucks County Bar Association Mock Trial competition in February. This was a great opportunity to showcase the program and put our students in contact with local attorneys and Judges. (picture attached).

Additionally, several of the paralegal students have been working as interns for local attorneys and the Bucks County District Attorney’s office. About 20% of the Municipal and Administrative Law class took advantage of a Service Learning component offered in lieu of a final exam. Students were required to work in a Municipal or Administrative Law setting for 16 hours and prepare a powerpoint presentation to deliver to the class. Topics included Filing an EEOC claim, Forensic Evidence, Immigration applications, Applying for Workers Compensation Benefits, Zoning issues and assisting Veterans.

Honored with a PLAQUE and a PLACEMENT! John and Earl were honored with plaque from Pearson for participating in the review of a book and doing some recipe testing. The book is titled ON BAKING 2e by Sarah R. Labensky, Priscilla Martel and Eddy Van danne AND Marty Goldman announces an awesome PLACEMENT ... another successful Hospitality and Tourism Management student! She will be graduating in May and has been hired by Apple Tours as a travel agent. She is currently participating in training and will be sent to Costa Rica...free of charge!

HAD SOME CHICAGO DEEP DISH PIZZA....

While at an Industrial Careers Pathway conference in Chicago last week, I had some really good dish deep pizza! Anyway, the conference was all about employers, academics and associations collaborating in their efforts to prepare people for employment in sales and customer service in industrial distribution. What is Industrial Distribution? It’s the business of buying, selling and delivering thousands of products from multiple manufacturers to customers worldwide. The North American industrial distribution market will have more than 240,000 jobs opening annually. Phi Theta Kappa Convention and Charles Beem

The Phi Theta Kappa International convention is taking place in Philadelphia this week and will run from April 3rd to April 5th. Charles Beem, will act as a faculty advisor. Our BCCC Chapter Pi Xi …headed by Charles is being recognized as a five star chapter. Good work Charlie! During the convention ,President Linksz will be presented with an Award of Distinction ….this award is given to college presidents and CEO’s.

We Meeted and Greeted

Four members of our department attended the college transfer meet and greet today. We learned a lot about various transfer programs with local colleges and universities. Here are some points of interest from the session:
1. Penn State Abington will offer Accounting Bachelor degree starting Fall 2008
2. Temple University offering PhD in Toursim and Hospitality Management in Fall 2008 and they are also building a new business school.
3. Philadelphia University offers accelerated programs at their Trevose locations, accepts up to 72 BCCC credits, and offers scholarships for transfer students with GPA of 3.0 or higher.
4. Central PA College will open a Lehigh Valley location and offer a totally online accounting degree.
5. Edinboro University out in Western PA caters to transfer students with disabilities - they even have a wheelchair basketball team!
6. Delaware Valley College is getting a new president coming from Columbia University. Look for many changes in their programs to come.
7. Again, LaSalle University is offering a cohort format in a day program at their Newtown campus for business administration students...also for criminal justice.
8. Gwynedd-Mercy College offers significant scholarship opportunities for transfer students.

FYI - I attended a really great seminar presented by the BCCC Foundation on March 12. Noted author, Lisa Ford spoke on exceptional customer service!! This was one of the best speakers that I heard in a long time. I know others were there from the department as well - add your thoughts on the seminar.
