A tribute to our beloved colleague...JOAN WEISS

"Sadly and yet proudly we have had our own Randy Pausch in our synagogue this past year. Last December Joan Weiss was told that after three good years, her cancer had come back with a vengeance and it was a matter of time. Joan was also a professor of business at Bucks County Community College. She had touched the lives of hundreds and thousands of young people not only in class but as an advisor to young people in an organization In Free Enterprise. Joan's students competed in national and international competitions against mostly 4-year colleges and won more than once. Joan was also that uniquely special teacher that we never foget. Joan was given the poor prognosis in December and she and Fred with to Disney World with their children and little grandson Darrien. They went to have fun and they did. Then she came back and went back to work because that's what Joan did and that's what gave her meaning. Then Joan and Fred went to Bermuda, Atlanta. She had never seen the Boston Pops but wanted to so they did and went on a three week cruise to Italy, Spain and France in July and then she went back to work for the fall semester. Joan's approach was, The end is going to come but not today. Today was to live and like Randy Pausch, Joan always had a sense of hope. Hope doesn't always come true but hope can sustain us today. Joan told me some months ago, she wanted to go back to Israel but just days before this new year began Joan journeyed to the heavenly Jerusalem.

Joan had a great passion in life. Her passion was not grounded in money. She showed she could be a real success in the business world but she chose instead to teach young people how to find success in the world of business and her passion was grounded in people. One of Joan's dearest friends told me that she thought she was Joan's best friend until she saw how many best friends Joan had."

What do you do when you aren't teaching?

I had a wonderful time taking a beating in the ocean 3 weeks ago after the tropical storm blew through. it rare that there are size able waves to surf in the Atlantic ocean but Sunday the 6th was one of those exceptional days. My bother and I spent about three hours in 3 to 6ft surf. It was lot of fun and also reminded us we aren't college kids anymore.

CPA Review Free to All Students and Exam Candidates

Thanks Arta Szathmary (MAST )for sharing this info!
How can your students gain access to thousands of FREE practice questions and answers on topics ranging from Deferred Income Taxes and Qualified Audit Reports to Contract Law and Itemized Deductions? How can they obtain FREE assistance to increase their knowledge and confidence as they work through the challenging topics found in your courses?
---How can your former students prepare to pass the CPA Exam for FREE at a time when they are just beginning professional careers and often lack the significant monetary resources that review courses demand? How can they locate FREE information to guide them through the complexities of today’s computerized CPA Exam?
There is one easy answer to both of these questions: CPAreviewforFREE.com
This program was conceived by Professor Joe Hoyle specifically to help (1) college students succeed in their classes and (2) professional accountants pass the uniform CPA Examination. Professor Hoyle is known around the globe because of his many awards and accomplishments:
--Author on all nine editions of the number one selling Advanced Accounting textbook (co-authored by Tom Schaefer and Tim Doupnik and published by McGraw-Hill).
--The 2007 Virginia Professor of the Year as recognized by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
--One of “22 Favorite Undergraduate Business Teachers in the United States” as named by BusinessWeek in 2006.
--Speaker at seminars across the United States on becoming a better teacher.
--Author of Tips and Thoughts on Improving the Teaching Process in College which was highlighted in The Chronicle of Higher Education in the fall of 2007 and is available for free at
http://facultystaff.richmond.edu/~jhoyle/
--Teacher with 37 years of experience in college classrooms as well as 27 years of creating, teaching, and operating CPA Exam Review programs.
Whether an accounting student is enrolled in an upper-level course in college or a staff auditor is studying to take the CPA Exam, they must be able to grasp complex topics and then turn that knowledge into points. A proper understanding of each essential concept is needed in order to answer related questions and achieve success. As designed by Professor Hoyle, CPAreviewforFREE.com makes thousands of well-written questions and carefully constructed answers available to everyone. Coverage is based on the content specification outlines used to create the CPA Exam and includes a wide array of subject matter. And, every one of these thousands of questions and answers is absolutely FREE.
A student can select a specific topic such as Consolidated Financial Statements or Internal Control and work through dozens of questions to build knowledge and ensure understanding. A professional accountant can take a randomized test that mimics the CPA Exam with questions pulled from across all of the topics within that section to highlight areas of strength and weakness. And, the program is entirely FREE.
Any individual who simply wants to learn more about the CPA Exam can go to
www.CPAreviewforFREE.com and click on “Resources.” Several articles are available that provide a wide array of little-known information describing the CPA Exam and how to prepare for it. The more you know about the CPA Exam, the easier it is to pass.
CPAreviewforFREE.com stands ready to assist students and future CPAs around the world. Thousands of high-quality questions and answers are already available and hundreds more will be added on a weekly basis in the future. For college students, CPAreviewforFREE.com has questions that can aid them in a wide variety of their courses:
Intermediate Accounting , Advanced Accounting, Business Law , Auditing ,
Individual Income Taxes , Governmental Accounting , Managerial Accounting , Finance ,
Information Technology , Economics
Professor Hoyle created this program to help individuals learn and achieve success in meeting their education and career goals. Try it yourself; there is no risk. Then, if you believe that this website can be of help to your students in their current classes or your former students taking the CPA Exam, please pass along the URL so that those others can benefit.

Business & Learning in Second Life..something to ponder

Businesses are in Second Life...hundreds ! From small business to large corporations Calvin Klein, Sears, IBM...

IBM...in Second life:

Do we just "tell" our students about the business opportunities that exist in SL or use SL to support the learning. Schools are using Second life to hold classes, invite guest speakers, support learning activities etc.

Attended the New Media Consortium Conference in Princeton NJ last week!

It was a great conference that brought to light many exciting ways to energize and engage students in the classroom. One of the presentations got my undivided attention because I have experimented with using student created videos in my classes this past semester to meet some learning objectives. For example, we made videos that represented the 4P’s of marketing and video resumes etc. Anyway…the link I’m providing here presents a showcase of digital media success stories at U of P.

“ Student-created video and multimedia is an increasingly popular undergraduate assignment option at Penn, replacing traditional research papers. Creative videos assignments engage students in high level critical thinking, writing, planning, scripting and group collaboration tasks.” (WIC at U of P )

By the way, these video assignments were applied to a wide variety of disciplines and classes. More specifically, some of the assignments given required the student to make a Video Mashup : http://wic.library.upenn.edu/multimedia/tutorials/mashup.html
This link can provide you with some more insights and examples of winning videos in their Video Mash-up Contest : http://wic.library.upenn.edu/mashup/mashup2007.html

Finally….and this is getting a little too loooong, if you have an interest I have some great examples of video projects assigned by instructors in a variety of disciplines that met required learning outcomes.

Thanks for listening!

..attended a Student Learning Assessment Institute .

I attended a Middle States Commission on Higher Education -Student Learning Assessment Institute down at the University of Delaware earlier this week. It included some awesome presentations and a wealth of excellent resources. It's obvious that using this sometimes misunderstood thing called ASSESSMENT ,at all levels, affords great opportunities to enhance and make improvements in student learning. I will be sharing some additional tidbits with you as soon as I organize my thoughts!

LBC, Business Studies, Team Up with Rotary Foundation to Host Visiting CPA from Italy

Pictured (left to right) : Business Studies Professor, Vernon Wiegand, Rotary GSE participant Marialuisa Iannaccone, and BCCC Student Tarnue Ballah get together for a chat prior to Professor Wiegand’s Accounting class at the Lower Bucks Campus.
----------------------------------------------
Miss Iannaccone, visiting from Avellino, Italy was interested in learning about the higher education system, American accounting standards, and the accounting vocation in the United States. Professor Wiegand graciously permitted Miss Tannaccone to “sit in” Accounting Principles and made himself available to discuss American accounting practices with her prior to class.
The Group Study Exchange (GSE) program of The Rotary Foundation is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for young adults. Through the program, teams of professional men and women exchange visits between paired areas in different countries. The awards involve four-week visits, during which team members share homes with Rotary families, experience the host country's institutions and ways of life, observe their own vocations as practiced abroad, develop personal and professional relationships, and exchange ideas with their professional counterparts. This Rotary year, our district is exchanging teams with District 2100 in Naples, Italy.

A PARALEGAL UPDATE from Tracy Timby!

Paralegal students participated in the Bucks County Bar Association Mock Trial competition in February. This was a great opportunity to showcase the program and put our students in contact with local attorneys and Judges. (picture attached).

Additionally, several of the paralegal students have been working as interns for local attorneys and the Bucks County District Attorney’s office. About 20% of the Municipal and Administrative Law class took advantage of a Service Learning component offered in lieu of a final exam. Students were required to work in a Municipal or Administrative Law setting for 16 hours and prepare a powerpoint presentation to deliver to the class. Topics included Filing an EEOC claim, Forensic Evidence, Immigration applications, Applying for Workers Compensation Benefits, Zoning issues and assisting Veterans.

Anyway, the conference was all about employers, academics and associations collaborating in their efforts to prepare people for employment in sales and customer service in industrial distribution. What is Industrial Distribution? It’s the business of buying, selling and delivering thousands of products from multiple manufacturers to customers worldwide. The North American industrial distribution market will have more than 240,000 jobs opening annually. We Meeted and Greeted

Four members of our department attended the college transfer meet and greet today. We learned a lot about various transfer programs with local colleges and universities. Here are some points of interest from the session:
1. Penn State Abington will offer Accounting Bachelor degree starting Fall 2008
2. Temple University offering PhD in Toursim and Hospitality Management in Fall 2008 and they are also building a new business school.
3. Philadelphia University offers accelerated programs at their Trevose locations, accepts up to 72 BCCC credits, and offers scholarships for transfer students with GPA of 3.0 or higher.
4. Central PA College will open a Lehigh Valley location and offer a totally online accounting degree.
5. Edinboro University out in Western PA caters to transfer students with disabilities - they even have a wheelchair basketball team!
6. Delaware Valley College is getting a new president coming from Columbia University. Look for many changes in their programs to come.
7. Again, LaSalle University is offering a cohort format in a day program at their Newtown campus for business administration students...also for criminal justice.
8. Gwynedd-Mercy College offers significant scholarship opportunities for transfer students.
